An immigration letter of support is one of the most human, and at the same time most strategic, documents you can submit in an immigration case.

This letter does not replace official forms, but it can make a difference when USCIS or an immigration judge needs to understand the person behind the file.

At Curbelo Law, we can guide you as you prepare your letters of support so they reinforce every part of the case. Before you begin, this simple guide with clear examples can help.

What is an immigration letter of support

An immigration letter of support is a written statement from someone who knows the applicant, whether that is a family member, friend, neighbor, employer, or another close contact, addressed to USCIS or an immigration judge.

Its goal is to strengthen the application with a personal perspective on:

  • The applicant’s character.
  • Their family ties.
  • Their work ethic.
  • Their value to the community.

This is not the same as Form I-864, the Affidavit of Support. An immigration letter of support focuses on the human and moral side of the case.

When letters of support are used

Letters of support are used in many different immigration contexts. For example:

  • Family petitions (I-130) to show the relationship is genuine.
  • Adjustment of status (I-485) to show good moral character and family ties in the U.S.
  • Removal of conditions on residence (I-751) when the marriage ended and you must prove it was entered into in good faith.
  • Immigration waivers (I-601 or I-601A) to show extreme hardship to a qualifying relative.
  • Asylum and VAWA cases to corroborate the applicant’s experience.
  • Cancellation of removal before an immigration judge.

How to write an immigration letter of support

There is no required official format for these letters. However, there are elements every USCIS officer or immigration judge expects to find.

An effective letter does not depend on legal language or length. It depends on clarity, honesty, and the level of detail used to describe what the writer knows about the applicant.

What an immigration letter of support should include

A strong immigration letter of support does not need complex legal language. It needs honesty, clarity, and concrete details. These are the elements that should be included:

  • Writer identification: Full name, address, phone number, email address, and relationship to the applicant.
  • Timeline and context of the relationship: How long the writer has known the applicant and how they met.
  • Specific examples of character: This is the heart of the letter. Instead of saying “they are a good person,” describe concrete situations that prove it. Dates, locations, and verifiable facts carry more weight than general praise.
  • Relevance to the case: Explain why what you describe matters for the particular immigration request.
  • Date and signature: The letter must be signed and dated. Notarization is not required for USCIS, but it can add credibility in immigration court cases.
  • Contact information: Include a line stating you are available to provide additional information if needed.

If the letter is written in Spanish, it must be submitted with a certified English translation. USCIS does not accept documents in a foreign language without the corresponding translation.

You can review official guidance on documentary evidence in the USCIS Policy Manual section on evidence for immigration benefits.

Common mistakes when writing an immigration letter of support

A weak or poorly written letter may be ignored or, in the worst case, hurt the case. These are the most common mistakes:

  • Lack of specificity: Statements like “hardworking” or “a good parent” without concrete examples have little impact.
  • Generic or template language: If several letters in the file use the same phrases, they can look manufactured. Each letter should be personal and original.
  • Leaving out writer details: Missing a full name, signature, or contact information can lead to the letter being disregarded.
  • Unverifiable or exaggerated claims: Honesty matters. Inconsistencies with other evidence can raise concerns and damage the credibility of the entire case.
  • Not dating the letter: Ideally, it should be written within the last 6 to 12 months to reflect the applicant’s current situation.

How many letters of support should I submit in my immigration case?

There is no set number. In many cases, one well written letter with concrete details may be enough.

That said, for more complex filings such as extraordinary ability visas or national interest waivers, it may be necessary to submit a larger number of letters.

Can an immigration letter of support be submitted in Spanish?

Yes, but it must include a certified English translation. USCIS does not accept documents in a foreign language without the corresponding translation. The translation must be completed by a competent person who certifies that the translation is complete and accurate.

The next template is for people who need to submit a letter directly in English to USCIS, immigration court, or another immigration authority.

Immigration letter of support for a family member

A letter written by a close family member can carry particular weight because it comes from someone who knows the applicant in their most personal setting.

This type of letter can explain the family bond, the role the applicant plays in the household, and the real impact a negative decision would have.

Good faith marriage letter for immigration

In marriage based residency cases, USCIS evaluates whether the relationship is genuine or entered into for immigration purposes.

A good faith marriage letter written by someone who knows the couple can be a key part of the evidence, especially when combined with a review of the marriage based green card interview questions and supporting documents.

To Whom It May Concern:

My name is [writer’s name], and I am writing this letter to support the immigration case of [immigrant spouse’s name] and [U.S. citizen or permanent resident spouse’s name]. I have known this couple for [number of years or months], and I have spent time with them in different family and personal settings.

Based on what I have seen, their marriage is real and entered into in good faith. I have observed how they support one another, make decisions together, and share responsibilities as a couple.

I especially remember when [include a specific anecdote: I attended their wedding, visited them at home, shared a family celebration, saw them support each other during a hardship, watched them care for their children together, etc.]. That experience showed me their relationship is genuine and based on affection, respect, and commitment.

I have also observed that both spouses participate in each other’s lives in a natural way. [Spouse 1’s name] often [specific example], and [spouse 2’s name] [specific example].

For these reasons, I believe the marriage between [immigrant spouse’s name] and [U.S. citizen or permanent resident spouse’s name] is real and in good faith. I am writing to support their case and confirm what I have personally witnessed.

Sincerely,

What a good faith marriage letter should include

For a bona fide marriage letter to be effective, it should go beyond general statements. These are the elements that give it real weight:

  • How and when you met the couple: Context matters. Knowing them casually is not the same as sharing family moments for years.
  • Specific anecdotes: Clear memories of the couple living together, supporting one another, or making decisions as a team.
  • Observations of shared life: Evidence they share a home, responsibilities, or life plans.
  • Impact of separation: If the couple would face hardship, explain what a negative decision would mean for the family.

What a USCIS officer looks for is consistency and verifiability. A letter that describes specific facts consistent with the rest of the record carries more weight than one that only expresses emotional support.

What if you do not have anyone who can write an immigration letter of support?

If you do not have anyone available to write the letter, an immigration attorney can prepare a document explaining why it is not possible to obtain one.

Letter addressed to USCIS or an immigration judge

When a letter is addressed to USCIS or immigration court, the tone should be more formal, and the content should focus on concrete facts, good moral character, and the consequences of a negative decision.

It can help to understand how an individual hearing in immigration court works so you know the context in which the letter will be submitted.

How to write a letter for an immigration judge

A letter addressed to an immigration judge requires an especially respectful, formal tone. In addition to describing the applicant’s character, it should explain family or community roots and the real consequences of a negative decision.

The EOIR Policy Manual section on filings and documents for immigration court outlines how documents are submitted to the judge.

Other types of immigration letters of support

There are situations where an immigration letter of support serves a particular purpose and follows a specific structure. These are some of the most common:

Immigration letter of support for a bond hearing

When a person is detained by ICE, they may request a bond hearing to seek release. Not everyone is eligible, because people with certain criminal convictions are subject to mandatory detention.

For those who can request a hearing, an immigration letter of support can be decisive. The immigration judge will evaluate the person’s community ties, the risk they may pose, and whether they have viable options for immigration relief. The letter should:

  • Be addressed to “Honorable Immigration Judge.”
  • Introduce the writer with name, address, and immigration status.
  • Explain the relationship to the detained person and how long the writer has known them.
  • Describe what kind of person they are with concrete, positive examples.
  • State whether the writer believes the person is a danger to the community.
  • Explain the impact continued detention would have on the person’s family and community.
  • Explain why the writer expects the person to return to court in the future.
  • Close with the statement: “I swear that the foregoing is true and correct to the best of my knowledge and belief.”
  • Be signed and dated, and include a copy of the writer’s identification if the writer is a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident.

Immigration letter of support for cancellation of removal and waivers

In cases involving cancellation of removal or immigration waivers, the letter should describe the hardship qualifying relatives would face if relief is not granted. Qualifying relatives vary depending on the type of filing:

  • For non-LPR cancellation of removal: A spouse, parent, or child who is a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident, under 21 and unmarried.
  • For a family unity waiver: Only a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident spouse. Children do not qualify for this type of waiver.

Factors a judge or officer may consider include health or age vulnerabilities, educational consequences, family and community ties in the United States, financial impact, and conditions in the applicant’s country of origin.

How to write an immigration recommendation letter

Although these terms are often used as synonyms, an immigration recommendation letter is usually focused on supporting an applicant’s professional, academic, or employment background.

By contrast, an immigration letter of support focuses on moral character and family or community ties.

To write an effective recommendation letter, follow these steps:

  1. Introduce yourself clearly: Full name, position or title if applicable, relationship to the applicant, and how long you have known them.
  2. Set the context: Explain how you met the applicant and what you have personally observed.
  3. Describe qualities with examples: It is not enough to say someone is responsible or dedicated. Describe specific situations that prove it.
  4. Connect it to the immigration purpose: Tie what you describe to the reason you support the case.
  5. Close with your contact information: Include a phone number, email, and your availability to be contacted if needed.
  6. Sign and date the letter: This is essential. Notarization is not required, but it may add credibility.

If USCIS requests additional documentation, a well written letter can respond directly to a Request for Evidence (RFE) with clear, verifiable facts.

In asylum cases, a supporting statement may accompany the asylum application and strengthen the applicant’s personal context.

Differences between a letter of support, recommendation, and invitation

It is important not to confuse these three types of letters, because each one has a different purpose and a different typical author:

Type of letterMain purposeWho usually writes it
Letter of supportStrengthen a family case, waiver, or defense against removal.Family members, friends, community leaders.
Recommendation letterSupport an employment based visa or green card case.Professionals, colleagues, supervisors, employers.
Invitation letterExplain the purpose of travel for a visitor visa, such as B-1 or B-2.A U.S. citizen or resident host.

Who can write an immigration letter of support

The strength of an immigration letter of support does not come from the writer’s social status. It comes from genuine, personal knowledge of the applicant.

A USCIS officer or an immigration judge values credibility above all. That is why it is essential for the writer to include direct, specific observations that reflect real experiences.

People who are well suited to write the letter

  • Close family members: Spouses, parents, siblings, or adult children who can describe family dynamics and the applicant’s role in the household.
  • Trusted friends: People who have known the applicant for years and can speak to their good moral character with concrete examples.
  • Community members: Religious leaders, neighbors, school administrators, or employers who have firsthand knowledge of the applicant’s contributions.

Who should not write the letter

  • People who barely know the applicant.
  • People who cannot provide concrete examples and rely on general praise.
  • Anyone asked to sign a generic letter without providing personal details.

Immigration officers can quickly spot generic letters. A document without substance not only fails to help, it can raise concerns.

Frequently asked questions about immigration letters of support

How do you write an immigration letter of support?

Introduce yourself, explain your relationship with the applicant, describe specific situations that demonstrate good character, and close with your contact information. Avoid generic language and stick to facts you personally witnessed.

How do you write an immigration recommendation letter?

Use the same structure: introduction, relationship context, specific examples, and a formal closing. If the letter is professional, it may be written on company or institutional letterhead.

Who should you address an immigration letter of support to?

It depends on the process. If the case is with USCIS, the letter is commonly addressed to “U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services / To Whom It May Concern.”

If it is for an immigration judge, address it to “Honorable Immigration Judge” and include the court name and city. You can learn more about this process in our guide to consular processing.

What is a sponsor letter for immigration?

A sponsor letter generally refers to Form I-864, the Affidavit of Support.

It is a legal document where the sponsor commits to financially support the applicant to show they are not likely to become a public charge. It is different from an immigration letter of support focused on moral character.

What should you write in an immigration letter of support?

Who you are, how you know the applicant, how long you have known them, specific examples of good character or the relationship you are describing, and why you support the case.

What is a letter of support?

It is a written statement from someone close to the applicant, submitted to USCIS or an immigration judge, describing their character, ties, and value to their family or community.

It is not a legal document by itself, but it can carry significant weight in the outcome of a case.

What is an example of a strong good moral character letter for immigration?

A strong good moral character letter describes specific situations where the applicant demonstrated honesty, responsibility, or commitment to family and community.

It includes the writer’s name, their relationship to the applicant, at least one concrete anecdote, and contact information. It avoids generic praise without support.

Do immigration letters of support need to be notarized?

Notarization is not required by USCIS. In most cases, a simple signature is enough. However, in immigration court proceedings, notarization may add credibility.

At minimum, the letter should be signed, dated, and include the writer’s contact information.

A well written immigration letter of support can significantly strengthen an immigration file, but what to include and how to structure it depends on the type of case.

At Curbelo Law, we guide our clients so each letter is consistent with the rest of the evidence and speaks directly to what the immigration authority will evaluate. Contact us to discuss your situation.
